Private Tutors and Tutor Rates

How much do tutoring services cost?

There are dozens of unqualified tutors that advertise on Kijiji and Craig’s List and offers various rates. Most often these rates are below industry standards and undercut most professional tutoring agencies. This is fine if a bargain is what you are looking for. As most people have learned in life you get what you pay for. If you hire an unqualified tutor the chances that the end result will not be money saved. An unqualified tutor will not yield results as effectively as a highly qualified and experienced tutor. If they could they obviously would learn industry standards and increase their rates. For example, a tutor who has mastery of subject content can enhance a student’s ability to grasp certain curriculum objectives in a short period of time. An unqualified tutor might not even be able to achieve this given copious amounts of time. The end result will be more money spent and having to book more sessions with the unqualified tutor. This of course can be prevented by employing a professional tutor from day one. They might charge perhaps as much as 30% more then other unqualified tutors but at least they have the skills to get the job time in a time frame that they themselves can realistically estimate. Qualified tutors tend to charge more as they have credentials and are employable within other industries. Highly qualified professional tutors offer superior services as they perhaps tutor full time and this is their primary source of income. Tutors such as this consistently strive to learn and educate themselves and are often very passionate about the subject content they tutor. They will apply extra care and attention to your specific tutoring needs.
The general rule is that tutors basically charge based on their expenses (usually drive time), time devoted to tutoring, level of education, and experience. This doesn't mean you have to pay top dollar to hire a professional tutor but you should expect to pay more than average for someone with the necessary skill set.
Many post secondary students offer cheaper rates for tutoring services but will lack commitment at certain times as their school year is significantly more important to them during exam time as will often fail to focus on what your child has at stake. They will focus on their own studies more then mastering the curriculum at the secondary level. For these types of tutors make sure they will be fully committed regardless of their commitments and schedule and whether they will be available next year. It takes time for a tutor to develop a relationship and level of trust with your son or daughter so don’t make the mistake of having to spend addition dollars having to repeat this the next semester or school year.
